Rosemary grinned at the bemused expression on Lenore's face; however, there was nothing funny nor happy about the question she asked.
"Nathaniel was taken a few short weeks after his birthday. I was away and he was home with my parents. Lenore, I know he took him," Rose said firmly. "I know my dad took him and my mother probably had something to do with it. And his dad... I don't even want to think that he is the reason for why he is gone."

Listening to her friend explain, Lenore's face became uncharacteristically serious. From what she saw, there was no reason to take Nathaniel away. Rosemary hadn't exhibited signs of being an unfit mother. Granted, Lenore had only just met her today, but still. It explained Rosemary's presence here despite her sound mind. Like herself, Rosemary didn't truly belong here either.
Lenore remained silent for a few minutes. Her mind was churning, with concepts graduating into concrete ideas. She muttered to herself, temporarily oblivious of Rosemary's presence.
"Ideas aren't enough... Ideas make it look easy. It's the execution of the idea that'll count..."

Rosemary watched Lenore's face grow serious and strained to here her muttered words but it was no use. It was obvious Lenore was off somewhere else, but Rosemary decided to keep talking because she figured Lenore could still hear and listen to her.
"That is part of the reason I am here, I guess. I know who took my son and they do not want me going to the police to tell. Not that the police would believe me, mind you. I was a disgrace to the O'Hara name since the day I was born because I was a girl. Add my son before marriage, my suicidal thoughts, my murderous thoughts, my emotional state that they had a name for but I cannot remember it, and my... physical activities and suddenly I'm crazy," Rosemary said with a snort.
Tears suddenly pooled into Rose's eyes as she asked, "I mean, we have to be getting out of here at some point, right? They can't keep us locked up in here forever, can they?"

Rosemary's words still reached Lenore, despite the girl's deep thought. It was best to always be aware of what was going on around you. She frowned a little as her friend elaborated her story. Even though the red-haired girl listed some traits that weren't exactly acceptable, she doubted any negativity was ever directed at Nathaniel. When Lenore looked up, she saw tears in her friend's eyes and knew what s had to do. With the utmost seriousness and determination, she finally responded with passion.
"They can and will keep us here forever if they can. That's why I'm forming a plan. We are going to escape and the first thing we're gonna do is find your son. As a knight, you have my word and my honor."

"You're going to escape," Rosemary whispered in surprise, a small smile taking over her face. "We're going to escape and find Nathaniel... You're a knight?" She giggled. "That's awesome. You're awesome."
"Thank you," she said, suddenly as serious as Lenore. "I will forever be in your debt."

Lenore smiled serenely at her. It was the first time she'd felt that emotion since arriving here. Now she felt she had someone to protect, even if the one being protected was a few years older than her. Reuniting mother and son was the most important thing in her mind now. Lenore could come up with a post-escape plan after the fact. There was really no need to worry now.
"You're welcome, Rose. Seeing you give Nathaniel the biggest hug is the only payment I need."
She left her position by the wall and sat on the bed beside Rosemary. Lenore gave her a confident and devious grin.
"This is going to require a lot of planning. I need to explore as much of this building as possible, so I'm going to make a few 'false' escape attempts. It may get them to strengthen security, at least for me. This will be beneficial for you since their attention will be on me. Also, I think we should start making a map of this place & hide it somewhere only we know."

"While having a lot of attention off of me would be wonderful, I would hate to have it all go onto you," Rose muttered, taking the girl's hand in both of her own. "You're younger than me, Lenore, you still have so much life ahead of you! I'm old and washed up and useless. Maybe my father is right, maybe I am a bad and undeserving mother. Maybe Nathaniel is safer and better off without me. We could find a way for you to get out."
"Surely there's a place here that we can hide the map once we make it? And there are times where we'll be able to look around. We'll be able to find a way out for you in no time," she said, smiling at the girl.
While Rosemary hated the thought of never seeing Nathaniel again, she knew what she was saying was right. Lenore deserved more than what she was getting and Nathaniel was safest away from her; it was a win-win situation.
Rose could now see clear as day why people would call her an unfit mother. She was always with him, devoting her time to Nathaniel, but there would be times where she needed a release and would leave him home with her parents to get said release. She sometimes threw violent, rage-filled tantrums, or was just too sad to see after him, and she thought of suicide much too often. More than a good mother ever should or would. Good mothers didn't think about suicide period!
"Yes. There has to be something we can do to get you out of here..."

At first she'd been so excited and eager, but now with what Rosemary was saying, Lenore felt the cold shock of disappointment and sadness. Although she didn't want to admit it, there was a little twinge of hurt with the emotions. She shook her head in disbelief at what she heard her friend say.
"No... no, no, no... it can't be just me escaping, Rose! We need to do this together. Your father is wrong! I can't go alone," she trailed off. Lenore clutched Rosemary's hands and hung her head.
She didn't want to say how lonely she would feel having to go it alone. It would probably only make Rosemary sad. Sometimes one just couldn't say the truth. Lenore didn't want to tell her she really had nowhere to go. If she returned home, her other family members would just send her back. Before meeting Rose, she would have had no problems with escaping on her own and living off the land in the country. Now that didn't sound so appealing anymore. Lenore had Mr. Jackal, but now he wasn't enough.

"Oh, no, I didn't say that to make you sad!" Rosemary said. She frowned when Lenore didn't look back up at her. She put both her hands on either side of the dark-haired girl's face and moved her head up so she could look her in the eye. "I didn't say that to make you sad, Lenore. I just figured out all the things I did wrong with Nathaniel and figured that it would be easier for one of us to escape then the both of us..."
Rosemary took a deep breath and said, "You said it yourself. We're going to have to do a lot of planning and we're probably going to get in some trouble as well, but we'll stick it out together through the end." Rosemary suddenly grinned at thr girl. "I said what I said because I wanted to keep you safe and I didn't want you to risk being dragged down because of me, but I realize now that that's what friends do. We take risk for each other."
Rose felt giddy and excited on the inside as unfamiliar feelings stirred within her. She'd never truly loved anyone but Nathaniel, but she felt that changing and her heart made room for one more person.
So this is what it is like to have a best friend...

Looking up at her red-haired friend, Lenore trembled slightly. Rose had seen through her & found her sadness, not that it was very difficult. Lenore was never very good at hiding her emotions. Before she even realized what she was doing, she leaned in and hugged Rose very tightly. Her eyes watered and Lenore tried to blink the tears away.
"Can't you come with me anyway? I don't... I don't want to leave you..." Her voice cracked as she forced the words out.
Lenore was beginning to understand Rose's reasoning behind staying. The dark-haired girl knew she was being selfish, but the sadness was becoming unbearable.

"Why, of course I'm coming with you, silly girl!" Rose scolded lightly. "I am afraid I didn't make that clear in my last statement. I'll go with you and you, Mr. Jackal, and me will roam the world. We cam even go see Nathaniel. There's no way I would be able to stay away from him. I'm too selfish."
Rosemary hugged the girl tighter to her and her eyes widened in surprise when she was met with more than friendly emotions for her friend. She squashed thise feelings immediately -though she knew it was no use. They were already there- because they would do her no good: Lenore was younger than her and a girl! She couldn't see how it would work. Lenora didn't seem like the type to want her own gender... "Don't cry, sweet girl, I'm going with you. I didn't mean to make you cry!" Rose said. "So don't be sad anymore. I do not like it. We have some master planning to do, Lenore."
Rosemary grinned; she was ready for them to be free and would stop at nothing to make sure it happened.

The dark-haired girl nodded, feeling a sense of relief that they would all be together. She smiled and wiped away her tears. Lenore was extremely glad Rosemary felt the same. She giggled softly, still hugging Rose.
"I guess we're both selfish people," Lenore said with a smile on her face. She was perfectly okay with being selfish together. That was part of what made it fun.
Lenore cuddled into Rose, tired from feeling and displaying such strong emotion. She knew they had a lot of planning to do, but it could wait for the moment. Closing her eyes contently, Lenore mumbled, "You're comfy."

Rose's heart swelled at the compliment but she didn't know why. People had told her the same thing - right before they slept together. It was strange, hearing those words come out of her friends mouth when she knew damn well nothing was going to happen between the two. She had been with both men and women, not being able to decide which she liked better, but never had they'd ever made her feel so... Strongly as this girl made her feel now.
Rose ran her fingers through the girl's hair hesitantly. "I hear that a lot," she said and laughed, squeaky and borderline hysterical. "So... What do we do now?" asked Rosemary, trying to stay on topic before she said something she would regret and end up losing her friend.
She felt awkward and out of place and wondered if Lenore felt it, too.

As Rose ran her fingers through Lenore's hair, she tilted her head closer to her. At the same time, her stomach felt all... fluttery. It was a foreign feeling, but nice. She looked to Mr. Jackal, who was wagging his tail while bearing a big toothy grin. He snickered at her and the small girl's face flushed a little. It was obvious that Rose only liked men. She had a son, after all. Mr. Jackal should know better than to tease like that.
Rose's odd, almost panicky laugh brought her out of her thoughts. Lenore didn't look up so Rose wouldn't see her flushed face. That was the only downfall to her porcelain skin, a blush showed up easily. Keeping her head where it was, she responded, "I vote for taking it easy right now."
Lenore frowned a bit. Something was in the air. It wasn't all that bad, but it made her feel uncharacteristically self-conscious.

"I haven't been able to relax completely for almost a year now," said Rosemary. She closed her eyes and leanrd back against the wall. "Is it bad that I am able to do so now?"
Rose sighed. "Just take it easy. That's easier said then done. There were things I'd do back home to 'just take it easy' that I can't do here. A nap sounds lovely, though. So does a shower but I'll find a way to do that later. I'll sleep for now," she told the girl.
I wonder if it would be presimptious of me to nap here, she thought to herself. Of course it would!
"I should probably head to my room now..." She trailed off awkwardly, unsure.
