"Tell me about the strange French man that worshiped his wife's chamber pot as a god," Rose requested, intrigued. "That's... strange, but to each their own I guess, right? I change my mind. I'd rather hear about the colors of the night sky. I feel like it's been years since I've seen it, even though its only been... three weeks, I think. I'm not sure anymore."
She sighed and shook her head. "I change my mind again. I don't want to talk about that. It'll only make me sad." Rosemary sat back up on her knees again, unable to sit still. "How 'bout you tell me about your time in the army? Can you do that or is that an off limits topic?"
She hoped it wasn't. Rose wanted to hear about the world outside the asylum from someone else's eyes without becoming sad about it from them painting a beautiful picture she'd once been able to see. She figured his stories were safe.

"Then army stories it is."
He paused, wondering where to begin. There were always his days in basic training but the majority his time was spent in Burma. Atticus was unsure whether Rose wanted him to start from the beginning or in the middle. He had no intention of sharing the end.
"Where shall I start, miss Rosemary? Would you rather hear about basic training or the time spent in Burma?"
He looked at the odd girl. Which ever she chose, it would be easy to tell. Rosemary proved to be as good a listener as she was a talker. Usually people who talked a lot tended to listen poorly and it made him feel better knowing his words weren't wasted.

"Tell 'er about the one time with the gun" said a familiar voice followed by more than two footsteps. In came Doctor Bramsfield, towing Vaudier, the one who had spoken.
"Well, well. Here's our Atticus. And how did you get in with this little minx, hmm?" The doctor smirked, looking to Rosemary who had been staring up in sudden terror long before Atticus noticed the two of them approaching from behind. "Rosemary seems to have a liking for you, eh? Such a shame. She's only wanting intercourse. At least. From experience, I've gathered that."
Vaudier sat down beside Atticus and slung an arm around his shoulder, not entirely in a brotherly way, "I was just comin' ta visit you and so was Brammy 'ere. We thought we'd ask if ya wanted to go see his house. But yer busy..." his face had interest and curiosity written all over it, and he couldn't name why for the dickens. Perhaps it was his desperate need to lure the boy in, make a lover of him and form a relationship.

Rosemary had been prepared to tell Atticus she wanted to hear about his basic training first, when she spotted Bramsfield and Vaudier. Her eyes widened with obvious fright, and her heart began to hammer in her chest.
She backed away slowly from Atticus until she was all the way at the end of her cot when Vaudier sat down and pressed herself against the wall, bringing her knees up to her chest and wrapping her arms around her legs.
"I am no minx," she mumbled, blushing scarlet. "And Mr. Ravensdale and I were only talking."
Rose looked warily between Bramsfield and Vaudier and hoped they wouldn't stay long, also hoping that when they left, Atticus would remain with her. Though she thought if Dr. Bramsfield were to stay, she wouldn't mind much. He wasn't always horrible.
It was Vaudier who had her terrified and he knew it.

Looking over, Atticus saw his superiors approaching. He'd been so absorbed with his and Rosemary's talk that he hadn't heard them come in. Unaware of the tension between them and Rosemary, he smiled.
"Rosemary is correct. We were talking. I'd already specified no intercourse and she has been very good about adhering to that."
Her reaction was immediate when Vaudier sat down next to him. Atticus knew that it was quite common to strike fear into inmates to gain their cooperation. What had Vaudier done to terrify her so? The man had been nothing but kind and accommodating to him. Then again, inmates also weren't valued here. Even so, she still was different from the rest of the cattle-like inmates he'd seen so far.
Atticus looked to Vaudier as he spoke. There was something unspoken going on again that he couldn't piece together. It was different from the unspoken something that he'd noticed around Rosemary. The unspoken something around her seemed to be generated from within him. This one was coming from Vaudier, an outside source. Until he had more time to observe, Atticus decided to reply to him and go from there.
"I told Rosemary I'd only be here a few minutes. I'd love to go and see the headmaster's house."
The structure here would take some getting used to. He was technically bound to patrol duty, but he would be shirking it. However, since Bramsfield was the highest in command, that made it okay? Of course it did. Besides that, he really wanted to go.

"Yes, yes, well, finish up. I'll wait outside and Vaudier will stay in here" Doctor Bramsfield said, patting his chaser's shoulder and stepping daintily from the room. He waited outside the room, leaning on the stone wall and leering at any inmate who shuffled past.
Vaudier smiled at Atticus and patted his shoulder, twitching towards Rosemary just to get a laugh "Yer, this minx here tried to have sex with Brammy. Tried to get with 'im when he was accidentally locked in a room with 'er." He giggled his high, keening giggle. He nudged Atticus playfully and kept his arm around him, comfortable with their current position.
"You imbecile. Don't tell him about that!" Bramsfield leaned back through the bars of the door to tell him and sighed "Yes, she tried to get me to make love to her..."

Rosemary flinched when Vaudier moved toward her, sighing in relief when he didn't, realizing he was just trying to mess with her.
"I am not a minx! And I'd rather you two drop this subject. Now," she snapped. Her face was about as red as her hair. She looked away from them and stared at whatever caught her eye.
Rose couldn't believe how her night or morning — she wasn't sure what time it was — had been going so perfectly well in her mind, to suddenly going horribly wrong by having Bramsfield and Vaudier in her room.
It didn't help that Atticus was about to leave her to hang out with them.
"Sir Atticus, it was very nice speaking to you. You're a lovely man," she told him, giving him her best smile, before glaring at the other two. "You all can leave now, though, and go do...whatever you please."

Despite both Rosemary and Bramsfield wishing to have the subject dropped, Atticus felt obliged to try and give the girl a suggestion. He was sure she'd come to this conclusion on her own but sometimes a small reminder never hurt.
"For your own sake, miss Rosemary, perhaps you should revise your stance on the concept of 'no'."
After all, no one ever responds well to unwanted affection. It's awkward for the object of said affections, although the instigator doesn't always see this. Rosemary's stay here would be easier if she learned to pick and choose her battles. The headmaster and Vaudier were seasoned opponents who'd be more likely to toy with her than the other way around. Plus, it simply made their jobs easier. Efficiency was something that seemed undervalued here as well by some of the Asylum's inhabitants.
"It was nice speaking to you as well, miss Rosemary. Have a good evening," he said and turned to Vaudier. "Shall we join the headmaster, sir?"
He'd been curious as to what sort of house Bramsfield had lived in. Atticus imagined it would be tidy with just enough space for easy maintenance. He wondered what sort of aspects of the man's personality it would reflect.

((Moving this topic to London Bridge, as they'll have to travel over it to get to his house and I like to keep my topics in the appropriate place. The new one is called "Rules Don't Apply - Continued"))
