Rosemary sighed and began to run her hand through her hair again. She stared at everything but Lenore. Eventually she stood up and began to pace around. Her nerves - and her fear - were getting the best of her.
"Of course I do!" she snapped before wincing. "Its just... I don't..."
Rose growled in frustration before falling back to the ground and put her legs back against her chest and rested her chin on her knees. "You want me, I know," she said seriously, doubt free. "All of me, I mean, and I can't give you that. I'm not a one-woman-woman or one-man-woman. Relationships... I don't like them."

"Why don't you like them?"
It was just a simple question, but Lenore knew the answer would probably be complicated. That was just the way things seemed to work. She wondered what could have happened to give Rosemary a dislike of relationships. Likely something bad. Her curiosity was overriding her common sense. Lenore had the overwhelming urge to know why things were the way they were. It had always been this way ever since she was a little girl. She just hoped that the curiosity wouldn't hurt Rose or herself this time.

"Relationships." She laughed humorlessly, bitterly. "They're awful things. They take away your control. When you're alone you have this freedom and you don't have to worry about anyone else but yourself. There's no responsibility of making sure you keep the other person happy and not hurting them."
Rosemary twisted her hair around until she could no more and ran both her hands up and down it quickly. She chewed on her bottom lip and frowned as she tried to get her thoughts and feelings in order. She was suddenly sad and wanted to cry and wished the fire in the lantern would go out because she felt over exposed and nude as Lenore stared at her curiously.
"Besides, relationships screw everything up. My uncle used to love me, you know, and then he started a relationship with me and all the love I had for him was gone. It vanished into thin air and now I hate him. If it hadn't of been for the relationship we started I wouldn't hate him and we'd still love each other. The only good thing that came out of it was Nathaniel," Rose explained. "And my mother! She used to be a happy, free spirited woman from New York and then she meets my dad on a trip to Georgia and suddenly she's no longer herself. If it hadn't of been for their relationship, I wouldn't be here. In the asylum, I mean, but I wouldn't be here either, I guess."
"Without relationships you have the freedom to be with whoever you want and do whatever you want. There wouldn't be any 'cheating' if there were no relationships." Rose sighed and grinned at Lenore. "I'm sorry. That was pretty long winded, huh?"

Lenore listened with rapt attention. Rose brought up some very valid points. She'd seen changes in girls she'd known once they were in a relationship. Even many of her own family members were the same, especially the women. It just seemed to happen.
As Rosemary spoke, Lenore's head buzzed with whirling thoughts. Her mind was processing this information, this view point. She focused on putting together a solution to this dilemma. Rose deserved to have her freedom and control of her own life, even though she had no desire to take those things away. How could she even come up with a viable solution for this? Lenore was supposed to be a genius; she had to figure out an answer to this problem!
Wait, did she just hear Rose correctly? She just said it so casually! In her excitement, Lenore clasped Rose's hands in her own.
"Rose, that's it! Love without the relationship! You're a bloody genius! We can still love each other without giving one another those constricting words that bind down our fellows. No one gets hurt and no one loses their control. It's perfection!"

Rose frowned in confusion. "I am...confused," she admitted. "Are you saying we wouldn't have to call it a relationship? We'd just know what we felt for each other and that's it?"
If that's what she meant then she was all for it. Just being with someone and loving them with no labels or restrictions - she would still have her freedom and her love all at once.
"Does this mean there would be no cheating?" she asked suddenly. "If I were to see someone else, strictly for physical reasons, that would be okay?"

"That's all it would be! Just our feelings for each other without having to suffocate under a label."
Lenore beamed. This idea was absolutely brilliant! She wished they'd had this conversation earlier and everything would have been sorted out sooner. That was okay, though. It was sorted out now and that was all that mattered. She cheerfully answered Rosemary's last question.
"Yep! We know what we feel for each other, so that's all that matters. I wouldn't be hurt at all if you saw someone else for physical reasons."

When Rosemary moved it was liked a blurred mess of fiery red and suddenly she was mere inches away from Lenore. Rose grabbed either side of her face and kissed her hard, long and passionately before breaking it and pulling the girl into a tight hug.
"I can see it all over your face," she said with a laugh as gleeful as her friends. "We should have done this sooner! Oh, sweet girl, this is wonderful!"
Rosemary pulled away from the girl and grinned at her, her right hand playing in her hair. She wondered why life couldn't have been this simple always but quickly dismissed the thought. She wouldn't have been here and met Lenore if life had been simple - if she had been normal. "A no strings attached love affair! I'll be damned," she said quietly, smiling softly, her hand still in the girl's hair. Rose laughed. "Not only do women make the best cuddlers but they have the softest lips, too!"

Bright red crept to Lenore's cheeks when Rose grabbed her face and kissed her. It was a flush of happiness and now she didn't mind that her face blushed easily. She kissed back with all the passion she'd been holding back until Rose broke the kiss. Lenore gladly returned the hug feeling happier than she'd ever been.
Lenore grinned when Rose said exactly what she'd been thinking. It was true, after all! She tilted her head in the direction of Rose's hand as she played with her hair. It was calming and she enjoyed the red-haired girl's touch. Rose was the best human she'd met.
She giggled when Rose spoke and responded with a grin. "It's true!"

And Rose was complete. Or, as complete as a mother who wasn't able to see her child probably ever again but managed to find someone she was in love with, could be. At least, she thought she was in love with her. Rose wasn't too sure but it didn't matter, what they had now was perfect.
"Hmm, I make you blush," Rosemary said and touched Lenore's cheek with her right hand. "I seem to have that effect on people," she confessed with a small, playful smirk on her face.

Unable to help herself, Lenore blushed more when Rose pointed it out and touched her cheek. She giggled, smiling widely as Rose looked at her.
"It's okay if you make me blush. I like that effect you have," she spoke in a playful tone. Lenore enjoyed the flirtatious nature of her friend. She liked how it came and went on Rose's whims. Actually, there were a lot of things she liked about Rose and oh god, her face just got redder, didn't it...?

Rose threw her head back and laughed, her big red curls flying everywhere as her body shook with the laughter. "I don't know what happened but I wasn't even trying that time!" she said through fits of giggles. "Oh, boy, you're funny."
After Rosemary calmed down she wiped a single tear from her eye and said, "If it makes you feel better you have made me blush at least three times since I've met you. Usually I don't blush. There must be something in the water here..." She snorted at that. "As if they need to do something to make us even more crazy than they already assume we are!"

After a few seconds, Lenore laughed right along with her friend. It felt good to laugh like that. She imagined laughter wasn't something that happened too often within these walls. The girl shifted herself so she was sitting in a comfortable cross-legged position.
Lenore grinned when Rose admitted to blushing because of her and laughed when she mentioned the water.
"Knowing them, they probably do put something in the water! Perhaps we're such a mix of normal and strange that it doesn't affect us. Now if only they could do something about the quality of food... That's enough to make me go insane!"

Rose's face scrunched up in disgust. "I haven't eaten in a few days but I did see the food and it looks awful. Mystery soup. Mystery meat. Mystery Tuesdays. Why does everything have to be a mystery in the cafeteria?" she asked in frustration. "I'm not particularly fond of eating things with the word 'mystery' in it."
Rose stood up, tired of the floor, and walked to the other girl's bed, dragging Lenore with her. Once on the bed she sat in an Indian style position. She rested her chin in her left hand and stared at her friend for a moment. "Well, you've told me a lot about you, so how would like to hear a little about me?" she asked her friend with a small smile on her face.

Lenore laughed. She couldn't blame Rose at all for not touching the food. She wasn't sure how she forced it down either. Maybe it was because she wasn't trying to taste it. That had to be it.
She walked with Rose to the bed and sat across from her. Watching her as she thought, Lenore smiled when Rose offered to volunteer information about herself. She grinned and said, "Are you sure? I'm a very curious person and I'll ask about anything and everything."

"I've noticed," Rose muttered dryly. Rosemary glared at her friend for a moment before shrugging. "It is only fair, seeing as how I asked to know more about you. 'Sides, I enjoy talking about myself."
She leaned back against the wall and stared off into space, frowned, and tried to think of what to say. "Well," she began, "I'm 21 and I was born in June on the seventeenth. I have a four year old son named Nathaniel Hale O'Hara. I'm an only child and I'm from Blue Ridge, Georgia." She smirked. "My family consist of deceased, hot-blooded, drunken Irish men and women and free spirited New York natives. I like to think I'm all of those things in one."
Rose sighed. Lenore opened up some about her family so she figured she had to talk about hers. "Nathaniel's dad is...45 this year?" she said, unsure. "He's a big guy: 6'5, probably 200 or more pounds, very fit. Nathaniel will be big like him but I'm glad he won't actually look like him. My mom looks a lot like me - or I look a lot like her. She's a lady," Rose said sarcastically. "My dad... We don't have a good relationship. We never have. My aunt, my uncle's wife- Nathaniel's dad, was the only one who was ever truly nice to me and loved me. She died shortly after Nathaniel was born."
