"Well thank you" he nodded curtly and set the instrument down on a side table where it would be free of harm until he decided to put it away in its case. Which he did a few moments later after making small chit-chat with the boys about his skill. He was proud to say he had the skills he did.
"I probably could have gone quite far as a professional violinist, but then I lost my Noel and everything changed. That's about when I bit the bullet and got a real job. They said at the local apothecary that I was cruel-hearted and cold enough to work the Asylum. And here I am. Ha. What a great commentary on the change that took place in me." He said bemusedly and sipped his cooling tea.
"Boss was a wreck when we first got 'im" Vaudier explained to his friend, "All sobs and wails in the middle of tha' night sorta' stuff. Made ya think 'e was onna tha' girls 'ow he carried on."
"I was in mourning!" Retorted Doctor Bramsfield.
"Yer. But did that mean you had ta scare the livin' shits out of me tha' first time I made a move on ya? 'E practically tied me up and tortured me because I told 'im 'e was somethin' special."

Although he could certainly see the cruel-heartedness and coldness in the Doctor, Atticus also saw the man still held his humanity. Perhaps not for the inmates, but definitely for his peers.
When Vaudier made his last statement about the doctor, Atticus couldn't hide his puzzlement. With his head tilted to the side, he asked, "Did you really tie him up and torture him?"
He had heard of torture, but never for telling someone they were special. This was just too bizarre! Then again, stranger things have happened.

"Or course not" he grumbled, a bit offended by Vaudier's comment. "I threatened to, maybe, but I was far too soft back then." He shrugged it off and returned to nursing his tea. He didn't quite like the way things were centered around him. He'd rather they spoke of Vaudier or Atticus, but a little discovery of himself didn't hurt for the young boy.
He finished off his tea and offered a fresh cup to any who wanted it. Vaudier didn't seem interested, merely blushed and turned away. It was apparent he was embarassed by Doctor Bramsfield's truth. He'd hoped to have gained a little pity and here he was a liar.

Chuckling, Atticus nodded. He was glad his superiors were an interesting pair. Noting that the doctor's tone seemed a bit final, he decided to ask Vaudier questions. Although he was always told as a child it was rude to ask questions, he couldn't help but satisfy any curiosities he had now.
"Vaudier, what was it like when you first joined? How were the other staff members and are the inmates any crazier?"

"Welp. That's an 'ard question" he laughed brightly as he swigged back his tea like it was brandy, "I s'pose they were nice enough. I'm not a big brute like the other guys are, so they all called me puny, but they were 'ospitable at the least." He trailed off and thought. "As far as the inmates, most are crazier, yeah. Nuffink seems to keep 'em from being so dangerous."
With that, he held up his arm to show a deep bite wound "Little bitch did this to me just yesterday" he said proudly "And I lived! 'Magine that!" He laughed and poured himself more tea greedily.

Munching on a biscuit, he listened to Vaudier's answer. Being smaller has its advantages and Vaudier certainly proved that. He smiled a bit more when his superior said the inmates were crazier. Perhaps whatever caused madness was worsening as time went on. Maybe not, he wasn't a doctor.
Then Vaudier showed an Asylum war wound to him. The bite sure looked painful, but it didn't appear infected to him.
"Oh my, I hope she wasn't rabid, sir! What did you do to her?"
If the girl had been looking for a fight, she'd gotten a good one. More than she bargained for.

"She got 'er 'ead beat in, she did" he said firmly, "Not dead, but le's just say she's got a few bumps and bruises, yer?" He laughed brightly.
Doctor Bramsfield chimed in with a laugh of his own, then, and nudged his companion, who fell into Atticus as he was unsteady.
Vaudier looked up and cleared his throat, successful in not sloshing tea everywhere, and helped himself up off of Atticus's lap awkwardly "Welp. I er... le's go stroll the forest again? We should probably ge' back to the Asylum soon enough."
Doctor Bramsfield nodded in approval and rose from his comfortable chair. "Yes. Let's take a stroll and then we can return."
