A smirk crossed Lenore's face. Level of intelligence tended to vary from chaser to chaser, but the girl considered herself especially lucky to have been stuck with a complete idiot. After creating a sufficient distraction, she'd managed to flee the scene.
Now she was in the leech laboratory. This wasn't her intended destination, but she certainly couldn't go back to the kitchens now. Rose wouldn't mind the alteration in plans. Besides, now that she was here, she could rummage through the drawers and cabinets for suitable weaponry.
"Oh, how I do wish I had uncle's rapier," Lenore muttered to herself. She was quite good at fencing and being unable to practice with an actual sword was torture. Oh well. Perhaps there were some scalpels around. Those could easily be concealed in her stocking or in the pocket of her shift. Lenore wanted to find two so Rose could have one.
There was only one way in and out of the room, so Lenore kept an eye on the door... for a while. Now she was so engrossed by the various sharp implements that she'd lost track.

Rosemary looked around the cafeteria and when she didn't find who she was looking for, sat down with a huff of annoyance. Chasers had come down her ward to collect all the girls, loudly declaring, "Lunch time!" She walked out of her cell and immediately looked for Lenore but she was only able to catch a glimpse of her before getting lost in a sea of girls.
That only makes me feel better slightly, she thought to herself with a small smirk.
Now she was in the cafeteria and still couldn't find her friend.
"Are you going to eat that?" a small voice whispered in her ear.
Rose turned her head with a frown on her face and saw a girl who looked to be about ten sitting next to her, staring at her food with a hunger she didn't think she'd ever see in here. "Mystery Tuesday is never my favorite, anyway," she replied and slid her tray over to the girl, aware that she should probably be eating instead of starving herself - no matter how bad the food.
She pocketed the spoon and managed to sneak out of the lunch room while the chaser's dealt with a girl fight that had broken out between seven other girls.
Something stupid, I'm sure, she thought to herself with a shake of hear head. Now, where could my Lenore be?

"Ohh... I wonder what's up there?"
A high shelf taunted the girl. Lenore was only average height and that shelf could easily be accessible to someone 6 feet tall or so. Grumbling about tall people, the dark-haired girl pulled out one of the loose chairs in the room and stood on it. With a satisfied grin, Lenore began to paw through doctor Lymer's tools and things. Finders keepers, after all!
"No more lobotomies for a little while, good doctor," deviously said Lenore as she pulled out the hammer and spike from a neat box. It would make the perfect chisel for created sigils in her & Rosemary's cells. The mirror land was still a threat, though its effects seemed to have quieted down some since her first day here.
A thought struck her and she hopped down from her chair. Lenore walked over to the leech jar and opened it, looking at all the wriggly little creatures inside.
"Perhaps I should set some of you free too? But where would you go?"

Rose walked down every hallway she could find and peeked in every room, each time holding her breath and then sighing in relief when no one was there. She was seriously contemplating being mad Lenore for about a day or two and giving her the silent treatment but then thought better of it because Lenore didn't ask her to go searching for her.
She was ready to give up when she looked in one last room and saw her friend looking through the cabinets and into something else that she couldn't see. Rosemary smirked and decided to scare her friend for a laugh, though she was sure it wouldn't work. In an official tone, Rose said, "And what exactly do you think you are doing in here, young lady?"

Jumping from surprise, Lenore exclaimed, "It's a big place and I got lost, I swear!!"
Slowly turning around to see what horrors awaited her, she blinked when she saw her Rose standing in the doorway. The girl instantly relaxed and shook her head, laughing quietly.
"You really scared me, Rose! I doubt I could have done it better," said Lenore as she walked over and hugged her friend. She grinned at her.
"I know today was kitchen exploration day, but I managed to find some doctor's tools with... alternate purposes."

Rosemary laughed and hugged her friend back. "I was really good, wasn't I?" she asked, grinning.
She shrugged at her friend and walked further in the room after checking the hallway first. "What kind of doctor's tools?" she asked. "And how do we get them out of here and back to our rooms?"
Rose sat down in a chair and grimaced. It wasn't the most comfortable thing she had ever sat in. "How long have you been in here, Lenore? I've been looking for you since they came to get us for lunch. I saw you once on the way to the cafeteria but then I lost you in a see of girls."

Lenore laughed a bright and cheery laugh that contrasted with their surroundings.
"I took advantage of the fight from earlier and slipped out while the chasers were distracted. Of course, it helped the one that brought me in was a complete idiot."
After speaking, the girl frowned. She hadn't given thought as to where they'd hide the larger of their scavenged weapons. The hammer in her hand, while small, would not fit in her stocking and would bulge out of her pocket. Lenore looked at it with a frown. She looked to Rose and showed her the hammer and spike.
"The spike would be easy enough to hide, but any ideas as to where the hammer should go? I need it to carve more sigils."

Rosemary threw her head back and laughed loudly. "Oh, God, you could stick it up between your legs! That'll be the best place to put it ever. Seriously. For the record: I was talking about myself. You couldn't do that." She looked at her friend with a grin on her face and shrugged. "No, Lenore, I've no idea how we're going to get that thing out of here."
Rose stood up and walked over to where she was and took the hammer from her hand and spun it around in her hands. "We could do some serious damage with this, for sure." She raised an eyebrow. "Do we really need this, though? I'm sure there are other things, smaller things, that could do just as well."

The girl frowned, seeing the truth in her friend's words. There could always be smaller things that would get the job done too. They'd work just as well.
"That is true... we could always get a round stone from outside or from the floor and use that," she said as she stashed the spike in her stocking. Lenore walked around the room and started looking through some drawers she missed.
"What I really want is to find a couple scalpels. It'll be exactly like handling a dagger, only smaller and fragile. So, I guess it's not quite exact, but you get the idea," spoke Lenore with a laugh. Really, scalpels were their best bet in terms of weaponry. Sure, it required close contact, but they were perfect for making quick swipes and slashes.

Rose dropped the hammer on the ground, folded her arms across her chest and looked around the room. She knew what Lenore was doing was important, it would help them escape, but she didn't want to talk about it anymore. Rosemary was bored. With a sigh she walked back over to the uncomfortable chair and sat down. Thorwing her head back, she closed her eyes and huffed.
"B-O-R-E-D," she said. "Hey, Lenore, have you ever been in here before? Do you know what they do in here? It looks too dirty to be doing anything medical-like."
Rose lifted her head and looked around the room once more. "I guess I should stop being lazy and help you," she muttered, mostly to herself. She felt like she was going to snap at any moment. If she thought the wrong thing or Lenore said or did the wrong thing they'd both be in trouble from the hell her snaps tended to cause.
I should have eaten. Its been too long and my emotions get even more out of control when I'm hungry, she thought to herself.

As she rooted through the drawers and cabinets, Lenore took in a breath. She had avoided coming to this room as a recipient of its intended purpose thus far and hoped it stayed that way.
"It is a medical room, though I use the word 'medical' loosely here. I asked some of the other girls about it. It's a room where they stick leeches on you. The doctors claim insanity lies in the blood and the leeches will suck the insanity out." As she spoke, Lenore picked up the leech jar and opened the lid. She could hear their squeaky little voices a bit clearer now but was unsure if she heard them in the same way she hears Mr. Jackal.
"As you can tell from the state all the other girls are in, it doesn't work. It just makes us too weak to resist their authority," Lenore said with a trace of a growl. She picked the hammer off the floor and pulled the spike out of her stocking to show Rosemary.
"These are used to perform lobotomies. The spike goes here," she demonstrated by putting it to her forehead, "and the hammer strikes it in. If the girl doesn't die, she's rendered completely catatonic. Successful operation."
Lenore put the spike back into her stocking and flung the hammer at the wall in her anger. The full injustice and brutality of it all had hit her as hard as the hammer hit the wall.

Rose jumped out of her chair in surprise and stared wide eyed at the hammer that was now stuck in the wall before turning back to look at Lenore. "I - I" - Rose cleared her throat and rubbed at the back of her neck nervously - "I don't think 'medical' could or should be used at all for this room or this place - loose or not."
She folded her arms across her chest, suddenly uneasy, and snorted humorlessly. "Insanity: it's contagious. If it is in our blood like they say, then shouldn't our parents be in here also? After all, we'd be getting it from them. Am I right?" Rosemary walked over to her friend and rubbed her lower back softly. "I know what I'm going to say is going to sound mean and selfish and completely heartless, but it's true: we have to worry about ourselves. I know what they do to us here is horrible - especially for the girls who come here - but we can't think of them right now. Right now we're escaping - maybe when we're out we can find help..."
It was wishful thinking. If they went for help they'd be back here fast as lightning and would never see the light of day again. Rosemary pulled her friend into a quick hug before releasing her and moving over to the hammer, still uneasy and unsure of her friend's reaction to her words.
She tugged at the hammer a few times before it finally came out. Rose raised an eyebrow and said, "Maybe we should take this with us. You'd do some pretty serious damage."

She kept still. Lenore mentally cursed herself for allowing her emotions to get the better of her. Not only had she succeeded in frightening Rose, but she'd made a hole in the wall. The girl didn't like letting her hot-bloodedness show through. You don't keep many friends that way. She hung her head and took slow, deep breaths as Rose rubbed her back. Lenore listened to her speak and Rose was right. She was absolutely right.
"That's right... we should just be concerned for our own well-being. If we have the resources afterwards, maybe we can help the others."
Lenore returned the hug Rose pulled her into, still feeling guilty for upsetting her. She watched Rosemary walk over to the hammer and yank it out. She chuckled a bit.
"I learned to fight on the streets when I'd explore them. And, um... I'm sorry for scaring you like that. I don't usually get that angry..."

Rose shrugged and smiled awkwardly. "It's okay," she said. "I wasn't that scared, more nervous and surprised than anything. Really, I'm the same way. That's another reason why I'm here - I'm violent." She frowned. "Nathaniel's the same way. Has random, violent fits of rage like his momma." She chuckled. "Maybe insanity is in the blood."
Rosemary shrugged and began looking around in the drawers herself. "It's okay, really. I'm fine." A sudden thought occured to her. "How long were you on the streets for? And was it by choice or force?"
As she looked around in the drawers, Rosemary shuddered and stopped touching the bloody, rusted "medical supplies." She looked at Lenore and said loudly, "What the fuck? This is the stuff they use to perform these already ridiculous procedures?"

"Perhaps that's true, but I don't think blood-letting is the way to cure it," said Lenore with cynical smile. She felt a little better about her outburst now. Perhaps that hammer throw was all she needed to do to let out her frustration.
Lenore looked at Rose when she asked about the streets and smiled. Her memories of explorations and brawls on the streets of London were some of her fondest. Not all of the fights ended well for her, but most of them did. That's why she's strong enough to lodge a hammer into a wall. Her face broke into a grin when she replied.
"It was by choice. I still live, lived, at home in the city. I'd often go out and explore. Because it's London, it was a new adventure everyday."
The dark-haired girl peeked over at the tools Rose was looking at and giggled.
"The rustier, the better. An operation isn't considered successful here without a good infection!"
