Cole misinterpreted the question and even if she didn't she probably would have answered the same way. Just to be difficult.
"Well, after my parent's refused to believe me that my murderous fiance raped me, they sent me here to...help me." Cole let out an exaggerated sigh, "My mother and father always have the best intentions for everything they do. It's just a pity they are so thick-head sometimes."

"Oh....," Wynter sighed and after a long pause said, "okay. Well that sucks." She didn't know what else to say and waited for Cole to ask her something or say something else.

"So, how did one as sane you get locked up in here?" Cole narrowed her eyes at Wynter and genuinely -and slowly as if talking to someone who wasn't quite there- asked, "Is it because you're a whore?"

Wynter laughed at Cole's comment. "No darling, it's because my mistress's husband caught us in bed together," she said this very sincerely and straight faced but remembering Elisabeth brought a tears to her eyes. "Which I guess makes me sound like a whore, but I was very devoted to her for 3 years."

"Seems a little unfair that you're the one punished for it." Cole pulled another paper from her corset upon finally running out of room on the one she was writing on. "The fact that you slept with a woman would have been enough to label you a whore back in my day." She turned to Wynter and shrugged her shoulders, "Guess I'm just old-fashioned." Even though she knew they weren't that far apart in age.
"But, three years is a very long time to hide from an angry husband. You didn't think you'd get caught eventually?"

"Well for 2 of those years she wasn't married. She took me off the streets where I..." She started but then desided to leave prostitution out, "...then employed me as a maid in her home." She wiped a tear from her eyes and continued, "When she got married she took me with her as her personal maid, or so she told her new husband whom was a dirty old man."

"Ah," Cole nodded, "Young girls marrying dirty old men. That seems to be a very popular trend nowadays." She thought about her own situation.

"Yes it does," Wynter whispered to herself lost in her own little world of pain before the asylum. "He didn't send me here right after he found us together though." Tears started to stream down her face little by little.

Cole leaned down and took one of the corners of her tattered skirt to her mouth, made a small cut with her teeth and tore a piece of. She handed the impromptu handkerchief to Wynter. "Dirty old men seem to have a thing for you, don't they?"

"Well..." she looked up taking the piece of fabric and wiping her tears away, "...bramsfield could have just marked me like he did all the other girls but to survive I made him do other wise." Wynter shrugged off the memory and continued, "I guess they do but Elisabeth's husband was older than bramsfield, well into his early 60's I'd say."

Cole nodded then looked down and continued writing. "So what will happen to the brats when their born?"

Wynter cringed at the word brats thinking it a bit insensitive but she replied anyways, "a month or so I think. He told me but now I can't remember." She sighed running her hand over her stomach, feeling the baby nudge at her hand.

"No, I meant are you going to do with it?" Cole switched to a new piece of paper. "Sell it to a circus? Keep it here in the asylum? Is the doctor going to use it as a test subject?" She smiled at mother-to-be, "Or will it be next months dinner?"
She took Wynter's outraged silence as an opportunity to fold up her written work and stick them into her corset.

Wynter sat there silently for a moment stunned by Cole's words but then soon regained composure. "Probably raise them in the asylum," she replied, "there are many rooms that connect to his office that would keep the child well seperated from the inmates." She said the last word eyeing Cole suspiciously.

"Awww, so Auntie Cole won't be able to see them?" Cole play-pouted. "That makes me so sad." She stopped pouting. "What about his other pets? Surely they are inmates and surely he allows them in his office as well."
