The sun hadn't reared its head at all today, and it was time to get some much needed light. Down to the sitting room Doctor Bramsfield went, carrying a cup of tea in one hand and his newest medical notes in the other. Soon he could seek refuge in his books and forget about all of the troubles going on down below.
It had been months since the last inhabitant of this room, and it had been covered in dust. He brushed away some dust bunnies from his favorite high-backed chair and flopped down, thankful for the worn out springs that all but hugged his sore body. Lately, his moods had been getting the better of him. It was for the best to come here and read instead of face the new entries to his asylum.
But, surprisingly, he was lonely. Something deep within him panged for companionship. As though someone from here could really appease that. It had been ages since he heard from his so-thought lover who had shared that fateful night with him two weeks ago.

Walking to the sitting room with a large stack of books in tow and two chasers at either side, Lenore was astounded and unnerved at her good fortune. When she thought back on it, it didn't seem like it would turn out the way it did.
As she'd predicted, her beloved military uniform was taken away when she was taken to the bathing court to be "properly sanitized". The brutes didn't even give her soap! She was soaking wet and wearing the same worn white shift and black & white stockings. Lenore sorely missed her clothes, since she got cold easily. She smiled. The strange bath wasn't what made her so happy. The soaking girl had begged and begged the chasers to let her go to the library and read a while. Something strange but nice happened then. Another chaser had come to his fellows and whispered something to them. They all looked at her and smiled before agreeing to take her to the library. Then... then they said she could read all those books in the sitting room! The sitting room of all places! Oh wondrous day!
Lenore could still hardly believe her good fortune. The library had the Greek epics she'd wanted and even a book on Troy she wished to use as inspiration for her escape. Perhaps she'd hide inside a giant wooden rat. No one would see that coming. She beamed down at the Greek mythology book that stared up at her. Today was going to be the best day ever.
"Here you are, kid. Enjoy your books," said the chaser to her left while stifling a snicker. He opened the doors, pushed her in, and closed them before she could get a feel of the room.
The damp girl looked around and spotted the doctor. This was why those chasers were so eager to get her here! Though her mouth carried no expression, her eyes were as wide as they'd been when Bramsfield yelled at her. Clutching her books tight to her small body, she attempted to make her way to the corner furthest from him to hide behind a chair, and she cursed herself whenever she stepped on a noisy floor board.

"Huh?" The man lifted his head as he heard the creaking of a floorboard. "Who's there?...no?...Damn rats..."
He returned to the medical chronicles in his lap as he took a sip of his steaming black tea, the aromatic scent drifting along as he exhaled over the warm steam rising from the porcelain. He thought he heard breathing, but thought nothing of it. The books were far too pressing. He was so thankful to be alone, even in the lonely state he was in. But a sudden crash jarred him from his delightful haze.
"Hello?!" He set the teacup down and stood up, open book clutched in one bony hand "Who the damn blazes is in here?!? He stepped lightly over the floor towards the supposed source of the sound, thinking he could just make out some hair through a gap in the bookshelves. Maybe a white shift? Was an inmate in here?

'Oh god oh god oh god oh god oh god,' was the mantra running through Lenore's panicked head. She was doomed if she announced her presence and she was doomed if the doctor found her. What if he performed a vivisection on her as punishment? What if he yelled some more? What if he yelled at her while performing the vivisection? What if after what if ran through her brain as she tried to sneak to the corner.
Lenore looked to Mr. Jackal for advice. He simply pointed to the corner in response. It was dark there and if she could make it to the chair, Bramsfield hopefully wouldn't see her.
The first thing on the girl's mind was to keep moving. Light-footedness was one of her specialties, but a noisy board easily negates that ability. She cringed when her left foot managed to find another vocal board, the noise cutting through her body like a knife.
'Bad board, bad board, bad board! Get to the chair and hide! Hide, hide, hide,' were the thoughts that kept her on track as she attempted to move swiftly and quietly.

"Ha!!" He swung the corner with ease and stopped the girl dead in her tracks, standing tall and gaunt in front of her. But this was not the kind of inmate he had expected. Lenore was compliant...at least...had been so far.
"Oh dear.." he said softly, his personality easing into a more relaxed and open state without a single internal warning, "And how did you get in here, then?" He stepped back, voice as smooth on the air as the steam from his tea had been. He eyed her soaked appearance up and down, not taking anything more than a doctor's-eyed notice to parts of her anatomy that were quite exposed through the wet white shift. As though a naked body would faze him, much less a wet and semi-exposed one.
"Who said you had permission to be in here, hm?"

"Ahh!" Lenore involuntarily squeaked out in surprise. She silently cursed herself for panicking and not being more aware of the doctor's relative position to her own in the room. Clutching the books tighter, she answered him.
"A few of the staff said I could come here... the big smelly ones." She frowned. That really wasn't a fair description of the chasers she'd met. They were all big and smelly. And that was a vague description. She tried to control her shivering the best she could, but her wet clothes and hair made that difficult. Unfortunately, the books could only do so much to keep her body heat in. She looked up at him with her slight frown still on.
"I just wanted to get some reading done."

"Ugh" he said with a huff, watching her shoulders shake, "Here..."
He shrugged his labcoat from his shoulders, holding it out with an impatient air. No use having a girl die of cold in his presence. He'd never get the mess out of the carpet. He waited for Lenore to shrug it over her shoulders, watching intently for any sign of danger in her reaction.
His emerald eyes wandered around to the bookshelves, scanning for perhaps a missing digit in the shelves, the explanation for the book clutched in her arms.

Lenore didn't hide her look of surprise when he offered his lab coat to her. Still, she was grateful all the same. Shrugging it on, she shifted the books to make the process easier. It was quite big on her, but that meant more warmth and less cold. She smiled brightly, getting her sunny disposition back.
"Thank you, sir!"

"That is not to keep," he said sternly "When you have dried, I expect it back" his voice turned bitter in an instant and he turned sharply on his heel, walking back to his comfortable chair, retiring again to his warm tea.
Best not to trifle with the girl. She could mean a bother should he spend more time than needed with her. He lowered his eyes back again to the medical journals, peering up occasionally to watch the inmate, make sure she wasn't causing havoc. She seemed to be quite docile indeed. Maybe he really was safe here today.

Shifting the books to her left arm, Lenore gave the doctor a smart salute in response. Now that she knew she wasn't going to be yelled at or cut open, she made her way to a chair that received better light.
Lenore set the books on a clean patch of floor to the left of the chair before sitting down. She crossed her legs on it since the floor was cold, picked up the first book of the stack, and began to read. The only sounds she made were the occasional turning of a page and her own soft breathing.
Soon Lenore was no longer in a dusty sitting room in a strange asylum. She was alongside Achilles as he performed his amazing deeds in the Trojan War.
