A feeling of immense happiness filled Lenore when Rose returned the hug. Everything was right in her world. Rose was right. It truly would have been much more horrible to be stuck in this place without her. She gave her a gentle squeeze.
Lenore closed her eyes as a comfortable silence fell over them. It was contentment that could only be felt be people who genuinely enjoyed the other's company. When Rose spoke after a few minutes, she smiled and answered.
"I'm 17 years old. I was born in the summer during one of the hottest days my family still talks about. I live with my mum, father, Mr. Jackal, and Felicity. Felicity's my cat. Mum works as a midwife and she's very good at what she does. Father travels a lot on business, so I don't get to see him as often. I have a lot of aunts and uncles and they're pretty fun. One of my uncles is in the military and he taught me how hunt and shoot. He even taught me some street brawling techniques!" Lenore beamed proudly at that.
"My other aunts and uncles didn't like that. Said it wasn't lady-like for me to dress like a soldier and get into fights. They also didn't like hearing about Mr. Jackal, so I stopped talking about him to them. Then... then they sent me here against mum's wishes," she said with a sad tone. Light triumphant laughter replaced it when she continued. "As if I'd go so easily! I made them chase me down the whole day! Oh what fun that was, to run free and strategize to evade them. I've only been here for about week or two. I'm starting to lose track of the days."

Rosemary shook her head and scoffed. She did not like what she was hearing at all. "You were born on one of the hottest days where you're from?" she asked, shaking her head some more. "I was hot giving birth to my son because of all the pushing and such and that was in December! I can imagine how hot it must have been in the summer on one of the hottest days."
"Did your father love you?" Rose asked her very seriously, though she continued on so not to ruin Lenore's moment. "I'm proud of you for giving them hell - a little taste of their own medicine before they caught you!" She laughed. "I always say I'm already a lady, so how can I become more of one? If I'm told I'm not being lady-like enough - which was often, way more often than my mother liked." Rose sighed. "Yeah, the days don't matter much in here, huh?"

Lenore giggled. She'd never been pregnant or given birth before, but she'd heard about how difficult it could be for the mother. Stories like that scared her from pregnancy. Plus, she'd seen all the changes the female human body went through while pregnant. Knights weren't supposed to be pregnant anyway.
When Rose asked if her father loved her, Lenore smiled. She laughed after Rose continued.
"Yes, he did, and I know he still does." A devious giggle. "They have something to talk about now, maybe even for generations. And y'know, there's nothing wrong with not acting lady-like. Actually, it's more fun to not act lady-like, don't you think?"

"I agree one hundred percent," Rose said with a firm nod. "Being lady-like is like being - is like being a baby! You can't say this and you can't say that and you can't go there and you have to stay here and he can have sex because he's a boy but you have to wait 'til marriage and then they want to get angry when you refuse to follow that particular rule..." Rosemary trailed off and she snorted when her words caught up with her. "Sorry." She giggled. "I get passionate about... passion."
She laughed. "Anyways there are just so many rules it's ridiculous. And, yeah, they'll probably talk about it for the rest of their lives: the girl who managed to get away... for a while."

"Nothing wrong with getting passionate about it. To hell with no sex before marriage. If you only live once, you may as well have fun with it. Besides, while it may condemn me to hell, I'll just take it over. The devil can find somewhere else to live," Lenore said with cheery laughter in her voice.
She grinned at Rose. "If I were ruler of the world, women could do as they pleased without fear of being thrown into places like this or criticized. Hell, women could love women and then I wouldn't have to worry about keeping it secret from my family."
Lenore let go and stretched. Her spine was grateful for the action since she'd been curled up for a while. Maybe Rose and herself could take over merry old England? They could be co-rulers and have lots of cats. Lenore began to drift off in the fantastical daydream...

Rosemary looked over at Lenore, who had drifted off somewhere else, in surprise. At first she wasn't sure she had heard her right but as she stared at the girl a little while longer she realized she had.
"Taking over hell. Wouldn't that be the day," Rosemary said with a small laugh. "You're... into...like...prefer women over men?" She felt that word was more...appropriate.

She nodded and smiled when Rosemary's voice pulled her from her daydream.
"It's always been this way for me. I used to think there was something wrong with me and tried forcing a love for men upon myself. It made me unhappy, so I stopped trying and eventually it didn't even bother me," she said with a proud smile. "Women make much better lovers, in my opinion."

"Huh, is that so," Rose said with a huff. "I think men are wonderful," she emphasized the word, "but women can be great, too. They're softer and they're usually up for cuddling before leaving back to their homes."
Rosemary looked at Lenore, her eyes narrowing at her in suspicion. "You aren't lying to me, are you?" she asked her friend. "This isn't you just trying to... Rebel against your aunts and uncles, is it?"
Her heart soared at the thought of her friend liking women. Maybe what she once thought was impossible, wasn't so imposible after all.

Lenore laughed and shook her head when Rosemary asked if her preference was a kind of rebellion. It was a natural question, but it still tickled her funny bone.
"If that were the case, then I've been rebelling since I was a little girl! But in all seriousness, no. I've given it quite a bit of thought over the years and this is the conclusion I've come to."
She smiled brightly and felt much better now that she'd told Rose about it. It seemed that this was part of what had been weighing her down. Lenore felt a light happiness when Rosemary had said that she enjoyed being with women in addition to men. She tried to keep herself from feeling too excited, but it could be seen in her eyes.

"Knowing you, you probably have been," Rosemary snarked, though the small smile on her face gave way to her not being as mean about it as it had come out. "That's nice. That you've decided to be yourself and not play by the rules, I mean."
Rose moved away from Lenore and her eyes roamed over the girl's body before landing on her lips and she wondered off in her thoughts. She suddenly felt paranoid. Had all the small touches exchanged between the two been more than friendly?
Had Lenore mistaken her touches to mean more? Not that that would have been a bad thing but... Maybe it wasn't just her feeling the unidentifiable things. Maybe Lenore felt it, too, and could explain.
But I'm older than her...and I have a kid. She probably wouldn't want to be responsible for a kid, even though we can't see Nathaniel, she thought to herself. Enough. I'm too old and we're just friends and these feelings will probably be done with me soon. Maybe I'm coming down with something...
It was back. Rosemary felt awkward and weird and out of control and she was on the verge of snapping again but she took a deep breathe and managed to reign it in.
She looked back up at her friend's eyes and smiled, hoping her inner thoughts didn't reflect in her eyes or her face or the in the semi-fake smile she was giving. "Rules are for schmucks."

Relief washed over her as Rose teased her. Then... something seemed to change. Like a shadow had suddenly passed over. Lenore studied the red-haired girl's expression carefully. She appeared to be in deep thought. It was much like earlier, when they'd gotten back to their cells. If Lenore's hypothesis was correct, then it was exactly the same.
'No,' she thought, 'It's not the same at all. It's not the same situation because I am aware now.'
Lenore knew there'd be only one way to find out if she was correct. She took in a deep breath after Rose finished speaking. When the young girl next spoke, there was fire in her eyes as she made the risky choice.
"I don't know if you feel the same as I do, Rose, but I'm certain what I feel for you is more than just friends. No one has been able to give me a satisfactory answer as to what love is, but I think this is it."

Rosemary sucked in a deep breath and held it for a few seconds before releasing it slowly. Her heart sped up, beat harder, and swelled at the words that fell from Lenore's lips.
Love.
Had the simple, four letter word been the emotion that had her spiraling out of control? It couldn't be. Rose knew what love was. She loved her son more than anything. She loved sex. She loved to draw.
Obviously, love is more complicated than I thought, she said to herself. At least, this kind of love. This... is different.
"I... I'm too old," Rosemary said suddenly. She winced at the weak excuse but she knew if she were to tell the girl that her feelings were returned, she'd end up hurting her and she didn't want that.

Lenore watched her intently. Her eyes burned, but not in an unfriendly way. She watched Rose as she took in everything Lenore said. It was important to let her process it. As her friend pondered, Lenore's body tensed like a spring, wondering what she'd say.
Then Rose spoke. Too old...?
"So... you're too old for a 17 year old girl... but outside these walls girls younger than I are married off to men old enough to be their fathers? That can't possibly be the real reason," blurted out Lenore. She belatedly realized she was being blunt again and guiltily looked at the floor.

"That's true. My mother did try to marry me off to a 47 year old man. I'm 21. What's five years, huh?" Rose muttered, mostly to herself. "No, that's not the real reason."
Rose lifted up and placed her feet under her herself. She huffed and ran her fingers through her hair a fee times, her red curls sticking all over the place. She shook her head to put them back in place and then clasped her hands together, sure her fidgeting would give way her nervousness.
"Lenore, I l...feel the same way, too," she said quietly. "But I am afraid I wouldn't be able to give you what you want..."
Rose turned her face away from her friend so she wouldn't have to look at her as she denied her. "I would only hurt you."

Her breaths were slow and even. Lenore listened to her friend as she spoke. She could feel the nervousness more than see it. The girl frowned in confusion when Rose said she'd just hurt her.
"What do you mean? How would you be hurting me or not giving me what I want? You want the same thing... don't you?"
Lenore carefully watched her friend, not wanting to miss any cues from her body language.
