As Rosemary related her background, Lenore conjured up images in her mind to match with what was being said. She'd heard bits and pieces about the States. Her books showed her what their boundary lines looked like but offered no explanation for what the people were like.
Lenore listened as Rose spoke of her family and tried to imagine what each member looked like based on the descriptions. Her mouth formed a little frown when her friend talked about her father. It saddened her to hear that the man wasn't very loving or understanding from the sound of it. However, Lenore was intrigued by Rose's uncle/lover. She wanted to understand how the mechanics of such a relationship worked and decided to give in to her curious nature.
"What sort of man was your uncle like? How did you two get to be in such an intimate relationship like that? How did it start and how did it end? I know I'm prying, but these are things you can't find out from a book."

Rosemary's body went rigid and she stopped breathing for a moment. She immediately regretted bringing that up. Lenore warned her that she would ask questions but she didn't listen. Honestly, she didn't think she'd ask that, though.
"Um." She twisted her hair and ran her hands up and up down it quickly without realizing that she was doing it. It was her unconscious give away that she was nervous and/or irritated with whatever situation she was in. She would stop if she were ever aware of it. "He was nice. I liked him more than my parents. He always brought me presents and told me these crazy, ridiculous stories of what he did with his friends when he still live in New York and he made laugh. I loved him dearly."
Rose smiled at the memories fondly before a dark cloud settled over her face and she looked ready to explode and snap at the next person that said the wrong thing. "When I was thirteen he told me I was absolutely gorgeous. I was more developed than all the other girls. I had a woman's body but a child's mind so I was easily swayed. He was the only man who had ever called me gorgeous! He knew that. He used that against me. We had sex and it hurt and I remember crying but he wouldn't stop. He was my partner for five years until my mother walked in on us. She was properly distraught."
Rose shrugged and grinned suddenly. "I almost forgot!" she nearly shouted in excitement. Pulling out a piece of paper from the pocket in her shift she handed it to Lenore. "That's Nathaniel. I drew it. It's my best drawing yet, I think."
Nathaniel was a cute, manly version of herself and he would be dangerously handsome when he grew older.
Maybe now Lenore'll forget about Uncle... she thought to herself. She breathed evenly and grinned lazily at Lenore as she looked over her drawing but her mood was dark and her eyes were haunted. She felt dirty and used and wanted to be done with the conversation of Uncle Gerald.

Lenore saw Rose's sudden change in disposition and quietly listened. It was no wonder she didn't want to speak more of her uncle's existence. She couldn't blame her for it. Rose had the same kind of pride and dignity Lenore possessed; being betrayed like that must have hurt on levels young Lenore couldn't even begin to imagine. She gently took Rose's hand in her own, an attempt to show her she empathized.
When Rosemary showed her the drawing, Lenore was quite impressed. It was obvious much care had been taken with the line-work and the blending. She was willing to bet that the likeness was exact if they ever escaped and got the opportunity to find Nathaniel.
Since Rose had answered her prying questions about her uncle, Lenore decided not to pursue the subject. It caused poor Rose pain and simply wasn't necessary. To try and brighten her friend's mood, Lenore asked questions she knew would be more pleasant.
"Thank you for answering those. Now... what was Nathaniel like as a baby? Does he have a sense of adventure? Was he colicky? What was his first word?"

Rose was still in her self-hatred mode but the subject changed did make her happier. She placed her and Lenore's hands in her lap and played with the girl's fingers, a small, shy smile gracing her lips. "Nathaniel was an amazing baby. I'll admit that I refused to hold him or look at him for an entire week but when I did finally hold him and looked him in the eye, he smiled at me and I was hooked. He was mine and I'd give him the entire fucking world. Anyway, Nathaniel was an amazing baby. I know most parents say that but it is true! He cried, sure, but not as much as the other babies I would see. He wasn't colicky. When he learned to crawl he was my worst nightmare! He was everywhere and there was no time for resting if he was down on the floor."
Rosemary chuckled and shook her head. "He was adventurous, all right! I remember when he was three, I took him outside to play and he took my hand and babbled on and on about finding the treasure of Blue Ridge county - of course, he didn't say it all clear as day like that but you get what I mean. I know when he was four he told me he wanted to be an explorer and how he was going to have the 'greatest' adventure ever."
"His first word was momma," she said, beaming like a truly proud momma.

She smiled as Rose played with her fingers, glad that her friend was beginning to cheer up. Lenore enjoyed hearing the fondness in her voice when she talked about Nathaniel. It was wonderful to hear a mother speak with love when mentioning her child. Rose looked a million times happier. Besides, it was fun hearing about Nathaniel.
Lenore laughed when Rose told her about her son's wild moments. He really did sound like he had the heart of a true adventurer! She really must hurry with their escape plans and go on adventures! The dark-haired girl smiled warmly when Rose told her Nathaniel's first word.
"We really will have to hurry and escape. Maybe we could take him on a big adventure too? He sounds like too much fun to just not find him," said Lenore with enthusiasm.

"Yeah, we do," Rose agreed with a frown. "Uncle Gerald threatened to take Nathaniel away from me. He was only six months old when he made the threat! He never gave a specific time for when he'd do it, though, and that's why I think he's the one that took Nathaniel," she explained.
Rosemary jumped up suddenly and began to pace furiously, hands moving up and down her hair as she went. She looked like a tiger trapped in a cage, ready to pounce as soon as it was opened. "I also think my dad had something to do with it, too. He used to always say I was too promiscuous to be a mother. He said, and I quote, "Whore's do not deserve to be mothers or have the right to call themselves ladies." And he always said Nathaniel would be better off and safer without me around and that one day I'd go off to see one of my 'less than gentlemanly' gentleman 'friends' and he'd be gone and then it happened and he was gone!" she cried out in anger.
Rose stopped pacing and stared at Lenore for a few minutes, deep in thought, only to start pacing again. "How are we going to get out of here, Lenore? We can't just talk about it anymore - we have to plan. Now." she said fiercely, a new glint of determination sparkling in her piercing green eyes.

'Oh my, this is behavior I've not seen in Rose yet,' thought Lenore. Her friend seemed to be undergoing a deep change. The dark-haired girl thought it best to listen as Rosemary talked. Now that Rose spoke more of her uncle's nefariousness, Lenore felt the urge to punch him as soon as she saw him.
She jumped when Rose sprang up and began her agitated pacing. Lenore sat and watched, captive as Rose's audience. Her face formed its little frown when the red-haired girl spoke of the role father had. She growled softly when she quoted him. Rose couldn't help herself; it wasn't her fault. Besides, it was kind of weird that her father took a keen interest in his daughter's sexual activities. That just wasn't normal. Lenore felt that he should be the one in the asylum and was sure Rose agreed.
A grin formed on Lenore's face. Rose had the spark and she was all the more glad for it. Rose didn't give in to the dreary and lifeless atmosphere. "We need to find out all of the entrances and exits to this place. Then, we need to figure out which of them is most disused. We also need to research when security is at its highest and its lowest."
She frowned again. This would take time and they didn't have time.
"We'll have to be quick with our research, but not sloppy. Also, we'll need weapons. I propose stealing two spoons and sharpening them."

She stopped pacing and stared at her friend, her own smirk forming on her face in response to the girl's grin. "Spoons for weapons or spoons for digging?" she asked. "It doesn't matter. We'll probably end up needing both."
"As you pointed out, we don't have much time. A week. We'll have to do all this in a week so we can get our map completed. Oh, my God, we're getting the fuck out of here," she said, her eyes widening in surprise as the realization of what they were doing finally caught up with her. "Holy... I have to work on my language, sorry. Maybe we should assign certain wings or whatever that we'll look at. And the more dirty, rat infested hallways, not many people go there, right?"
Rosemary was glowing with the thought of getting out the wretched place. She was bouncing in place in excitment but she was trying to reign herself in, lest her friend think she really was crazy. "He always said whore's weren't smart but I'll prove him wrong. You watch. We both will." She grinned.

Lenore laughed when she heard her friend swear in excitement.
"No need to worry about language. As long as we get out of here is what matters!"
She thought about how to divide the wings amongst themselves. The Asylum was huge and they were just two girls. She wondered how many floors there were. Lenore chuckled. That would be something they'd have to find out.
"I can explore around ward A while you search our ward B. If you take on the staff rooms, I can check the leeching and surgical wards. We can both take on the hallways. Hm... I've already been to the sitting room and library. Are there places I haven't thought of?"
The girl didn't mind her friend's excitement at all. It was infectious and she loved it. She was glad Rose was on board with the idea. Lenore smirked devilishly.
"Together we'll be unstoppable! We're geniuses, after all! No poorly-built asylum will keep us in! We're too smart for these people," she exclaimed passionately.

"Two supposedly crazy girls taking over the world! Lenore, that will be the day! And hell hasn't even frozen over yet!" Rose exclaimed in excitement.
"We can start tomorrow, right now I have a more important topic to discuss," she said seriously. She sat back on the bed next to Lenore and wondered why she hadn't thought of it earlier. "Have you actually ever been with a woman? I know you like them, us, but have you been with one?"

Lenore laughed and grinned widely at her friend. It truly would be amazing if they were the reason hell froze over! She tilted her head curiously when Rose spoke in her serious tone. What could the important topic be?
Her face turned bright red when her unasked question was answered. She giggled nervously and glanced at her.
"Although I know I only love women, I've never been with one before. I never felt any of the women around me previously met my standards. They weren't smart enough, they were too snooty, or there just wasn't any physical attraction. Um... I know how the process works. I read about it in a book in a shady bookstore once. Before I got kicked out..."

Rosemary threw her head back and laughed loudly, covering her mouth when a snort escaped and caught her by surprise. "How did you manage to get kicked out of a shady bookstore?" she asked between giggles. "It just doesn't seem possible!"
Rose shook her head in disbelief. "By 'process' do you mean sex?" Her eyes wattered and widened as she gave her best glassy, sweet as pie, innocent look. It was usually how she got her way. She always kept in mind the day her "friend" told her it was like a seductive version of hypnosis. She always used it to her advantage. "You've never done 'it' before?" Rose giggled. "Wow."
"And, more importantly, they tell you what to do during same-sex intercourse in books?!"

"Hey, now don't laugh," Lenore attempted to chide her friend even though she was laughing too. "I got kicked out for bothering the patrons and making them uncomfortable. I'd figured that if they were frequent readers of erotica, then surely they'd be able to answer my questions. The owner said I was bad for business and kicked me out."
A light giggle escaped her lips. She'd never told anyone that story and it felt good not to be judged for it. Besides, Rose had a wonderful sense of humor. Being around her put her at ease. Lenore nodded with another laugh when Rose asked if she really never had sex before. The blush became a bit redder the more she looked at Rosemary.
"Well, the books I found weren't like a set of instructions. It was a story and it narrated how two women do it. It was the only way I could find out at the time," she finished saying with the slightest hint of embarrassment. She was 17 for god's sake. Most girls her age were already married or had done the deed. Lenore felt horribly stunted with her sexual growth.

"Well, I can see why!" Rose exclaimed. "They already know they're shady people, looking for things that no lady or gentleman should ever, ever look at or buy, but they don't want to be called out on it! 'Specially by a young girl who should be at home woth her new husband or something."
She raised an eyebrow at Lenore. "You seem... Worried? Ashamed, maybe embarrassed? I don't know but you seem off. Is it because of your lack of experience or what I said just a moment ago? About being home with your new husband? You don't have to be. Not every girl is married young," she said, trying to reassure her embarrassed friend while at the same being on the defensive.
"Anyway," she sang, "how was the book? Did you learn a lot? Did you like it?" Rose shook her head, a smile on her lips. "Wow. This means you're all... Innocent and stuff. This must be love because if this was anyone else telling me this I would have gone running for the hills."

Lenore blushed a bit more and nodded. "Just feeling a bit embarrassed from lack of experience. It feels like I ought to have done these things by now and know about them."
She gave a soft smile, glad that Rose didn't look down on her for it. The dark-haired girl would much rather be very selective with her love instead of doing it with someone who didn't meet her standards. Rose fulfilled all her set standards but also had some intangible quality she couldn't quite explain. Perhaps the intangible quality was what made Rose a Rose? Whatever it was, Lenore liked it.
"I liked some parts of it, though it wasn't written as well as it could have been," laughed Lenore. "However, I did learn quite a bit from it even though the story itself was nothing special." She giggled at Rose's last comment.
"I'm glad you didn't run," she said with a smile.
